Who operates Volta
Volta is operated by Volta Travel LLC. References to "Volta," "we," "us," or "our" throughout this policy refer to Volta Travel LLC.
What we collect
When you create an account, we collect your email address, display name, and profile picture from the provider you sign in with — Google or Apple — where the provider makes them available. Your profile picture is re-synced each time you sign in, so it stays current with whatever photo your provider has at the time. If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only ever receive Apple's private relay address, never your real one. When you create a trip, we collect the destination, dates, and traveler count you provide. When you set a budget or preferences, that data is stored and associated with your account.
When a trip member invites someone by email, we collect the invitee's name and email address and use a third-party email delivery provider to send that invitation. This is used solely to deliver the invite and is not used for any other purpose.
Subscribing to Volta Pro involves additional data, described below. Aside from that, we collect nothing beyond what you explicitly enter into Volta and the technical data described next.
Technical & log data
When you use Volta, we automatically collect certain technical information, including your IP address, browser type, and approximate location derived from your IP. This data is used solely for security monitoring, fraud prevention, and abuse detection, and we never sell it.
How we use your data
Your data is used solely to provide the Volta service — planning trips, generating AI recommendations, and managing group memberships. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.
Budget and preference data is private by design. Other members of your trip cannot see your budget. Only you and Volta's AI (used to generate recommendations) can access it.
AI recommendations
Volta uses a third-party AI provider to generate personalized trip recommendations. Your budget and preferences are sent to that provider's servers to produce recommendations. We send only a random ID that isn't tied to your name or email, for abuse prevention — never your real identity.
Anything you type in the "anything else?" preference box is read by the same AI provider and turned into search settings — write "we'd like to fly business class" and we'll search business class fares for you. We only use what you actually write there; we don't guess at your preferences from anything else you do in Volta.
Volta Pro subscriptions
If you subscribe to Volta Pro, the payment itself is handled by Apple if you subscribed in the iOS app, or by Stripe if you subscribed on the web. Either way, we never see or store your card details.
What we keep is simply enough to know whether your account should have Pro: that you're subscribed, when the current period ends, whether you've cancelled, and the reference numbers Apple or Stripe give us for your subscription.
Notifications (iOS app, optional)
If you allow notifications in the Volta iOS app, we save a code that tells Apple which device to deliver them to. It points at a phone, not at you — it holds no personal information — and we use it only to send you updates about your own trips. Say no to the permission prompt and no code is ever created. If you delete your account, it's deleted with everything else.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your data or share it for marketing. We do pass specific data to the providers that make Volta work, each only receiving what its job requires:
| Purpose | What they receive |
|---|---|
| Infrastructure & authentication | Your account and all trip data, stored on our behalf |
| AI recommendations | Trip details, budget and preferences, plus a random ID that isn't tied to your name or email |
| Flight search | Destination, dates, and number of travelers — used to fetch real fares. Booking happens on Google Flights or whichever airline or seller you choose there, under their terms |
| Hotel & activity search | Destination and dates only. Booking happens on the provider's own site, under their terms |
| Email delivery | Recipient address and message content for invitations and account emails |
| Subscription billing | Handled by Apple or Stripe; we receive subscription status back, never card details |
| Push notifications | A device push token and the notification content |
Google Calendar (optional)
If you choose to connect Google Calendar from your Settings page, Volta requests free/busy access only — we can see whether time blocks are marked busy, but never event titles, descriptions, locations, or attendees. This is used solely to suggest travel dates when everyone in a trip is available. You can disconnect at any time from Settings, which revokes our access and deletes the connection from our systems.
iCloud Calendar (optional)
If you choose to connect iCloud Calendar from your Settings page, Volta reads your calendar data solely to determine free/busy blocks — event titles, descriptions, locations, and attendees are discarded immediately and never stored. This uses an app-specific password — a separate, revocable credential Apple lets you generate for this purpose, not your actual Apple ID password — which is encrypted at rest and never stored in plain text. You can disconnect at any time from Settings, which permanently deletes the encrypted credential from our systems; unlike Google, there is no separate access grant on Apple's side for us to revoke remotely.
Data storage
Your data is stored with our infrastructure and authentication provider, hosted on encrypted cloud infrastructure. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit.
Cookies
We use an essential cookie to keep you signed in. This is required for the service to function and cannot be disabled. We may also use optional, cookieless analytics (aggregated page views and performance data, never tied to your identity) to understand how Volta is used and improve the product — you can decline this at any time via Preferences in the footer.
| Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication cookie | Keeps you signed in, set by our authentication provider. Essential — cannot be disabled. | Up to 24 hours, or sooner if you're inactive for 30 minutes — cleared immediately when you sign out |
That's the only cookie Volta sets. Analytics is cookieless by design — it does not set a cookie or use any client-side identifier, and stays off until you opt in.
Data retention
Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from the Account page. Deletion permanently removes your account, all trips you own (where you are the only member), and all associated data from our systems, including notification settings.
One thing survives that deletion, and it's not within our control: your payment provider's transaction records, which Apple or Stripe retain to meet their own legal obligations.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, or delete your data at any time. You can delete your account self-serve from the Account page. For any other requests, contact us at support@volta-travel.com or use the Contact Us form below.
Contact us
Have a privacy question, a data request, or anything else? Pro subscribers have a dedicated in-app support form with case tracking — everyone else (including signed-out visitors) can reach us directly through our Contact Us page, or by emailing support@volta-travel.com.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves. We will notify users of material changes via email or an in-app notice.
